School is out and summer is now upon us and if you have kids, by now you probably already heard … “Mom, I’m bored!”. Summer has barely started and sadly, kids are already experiencing the summertime blues. Here are a few ideas to help them cure Summertime boredom:
- Since they are so used to a schedule in school, don’t allow them to waste their entire summer in front of the TV or video games. Spend some time with your child. Do an activity together. Talk to them, play board games or cards with them. Thinking games are great instead of staring at a monitor for the most part of the day.
- Have your child help you around the house. If you have a garden, this may be a fun learning activity for them. Yard work gets kids away from the TV and the fresh air is a plus too. Spending time in your backyard or garden is a wonderful opportunity to learn about science and health without your child realizing it. If you have a vegetable garden, your child’s effort will be rewarded when you harvest the fruits and vegetables together from your garden.
- Teach your child a skill they can use for when they grow up. Allow them to take over one night a week. This means, they get to plan the meal, shop for the ingredients and prepare the meal for the family. This also includes clean up. You not only enjoy a few hours off but are teaching a valuable skill to your child.
- Pick up a new hobby as a family. Girls may enjoy scrapbooking while boys may like assembling model cars or planes.
- Encourage your child to read. Visit the library often or even your local book stores. Giving them points for books they read may be a good idea where you can give them a special treat once they earn so many points.
- Enjoy the outdoors. Go camping, hiking or biking, birdwatching or fishing. You could pick up a book about birds or plants and you can identify them as you enjoy the big outdoors. Just a word of caution - whenever you are going out to enjoy the outside, don’t forget your sunscreen.
- You can also plan a trip to the beach, the zoo, the local theme park or even a picnic at the park.
Every moment of Summer does not need to be planned but, your child will appreciate it if there are lots to do during the summer. Of course you may want to leave some days as just days to hang out at home. The ideas mentioned above are just a few ways to amuse your child during the summer and help them beat boredom.

My son loves helping…outside. Living in an apartment complex there isn’t any ‘outside’ work he can help with so he spends a lot of time with my family (Aunts & Uncles, Grandparents, etc) because they let him mow the lawn, water flowers, etc. He loves it. Now if I could just get him interested in helping around HERE! LOL We do play games, read, etc.
