Tell Me Thursday #2

Yesterday’s WW post was a short funny video about 2 women having some Computer Trouble - I found it while surfing on YouTube. I posted it because it reminded me of how I sometimes get so impatient when my laptop gets stuck - it can get really frustrating. This was a funny spin on what we WAHM’s go through when our computers go “crazy”. Now, when my laptop starts to act up - I just smile and remember the funny video.

No time to blog

No time to blog? Here’s a solution for you.

Microblogging has been the “hottest” thing these days in cyberworld. What is it exactly? Well, the shortest and simplest definition I can think of is that microblogging is like text messaging except - instead of sending your text to just one person, you are sending it for cyber-world to see. Note though that you have an option of having your microblog posts available to everyone on the web or a selected private group.

So … how do you microblog?

While a traditional blog requires you to log-in and post your entries online, you can “microblog” using both your cell phone or your computer - thus microblogging presents that benefit of portability. One thing to remember though - microblogging only allows you to blog brief posts (usually limited to 140 to 200 characters) at a time. So before you start typing your post, you need to really think about how you can make the most out of your words. You can microblog as often as you want as long as you do not post spam. You can even build a following or your own microblogging community. You can connect with other microbloggers and get quick replies to your microblog posts. The fun thing about microblogging is that you can send your messages in text, audio or even video.

Below are some advantages of microblogging:
- It is very easy to post your thoughts in cyberspace using microblogging. Microblog to share your events, promote your business or just to share links worth checking out.
- You can build your own community by microblogging and have others subscribe to your feed - a great way to promote yourself. You can then make a connection with others.
- Microblogging is portable. You can use your cell phone and still be connected to your community even if you are on the go.
- You can microblog using text, audio or even video so there are a lot of possibilities here - you can let your creativity come out!
- The fact that there is a 140-200 character limit in microblogging, you do not have to worry about providing lots of content in your microblog post.

There are some disadvantages too and they are listed below:
- It can be really addicting and if you do not use it properly, it could be a great time waster.
- If you are not careful about what your post on your microblog - for example posting about your “ideas”, your subscribers can easily “adopt one of your ideas and pass it as their own”.
- If you work online and are microblogging for the most part of the day, it can be really distracting and it can take away your focus on projects that you need to complete.

Two microblogging tools that I have been really enjoying lately are Twitter and Utterz. You can follow my twittering here and hear my uttering here. If you want to learn a bit more about Twitter, I have a short video tutorial you can watch by clicking here. Feel free to subscribe to my tweets and utterz.

Tuesday Toot #1

This is my first Tuesday Toot post. I must say first that when I was brainstorming for the Meme name - my daughter was laughing when I came up with “Tuesday Toot” - she said “Mom …. eeeeewwww!” I know … at first I thought eeeewwww too but later I thought it was kinda catchy and after I explained “Toot Your Own Horn” to her, she kinda got it - so I am sticking with this Meme name no matter how silly it is.

Ok - I am Tooting my own Horn …. I finally did it - I gave Mommy Community a face lift. I have been so wanting to do this for a couple months now but was sooo busy. I finally made decision to close my twitbin for a while and tried not to be distracted and what do you know … it only took me a couple of hours to update the look of the site. So, I am happy - I have been procrastinating for soooo long and in reality I only needed 2 hours to complete the task. My advise for those who are wanting to complete a “small project” - STOP Procrastinating and just do it already!

BTW - I hope you are liking the new look. Let me know what your thoughts are!

Tuesday Toot Kick-Off

To kickoff our New Meme - Tuesday Toot - I am giving away a $10 gift certificate - your choice … McDonalds’ Giftcard (worth $10) or Starbucks Giftcard (worth $10). All those who participate and leave a comment in the blog entry will be entered in a drawing. Only ONE winner will be picked. The winner will be announced on our 2nd week of Tuesday Toot - Feb. 5, 2008.

I would also like to take this moment to call on prize sponsors … if you would like to donate a prize for our Tuesday Toot drawings for the next few weeks - feel free to leave me a comment or send me a message and I will contact you. In exchange for your donation, I would love to offer you advertising through the Mommy Community podcast.

Out with the OLD, In with the NEW!

Well, you probably noticed something different here with the site - I gave it a “facelift”. I am hoping for a cleaner look and easier navigation. I hope you like it! The old site looked like this …

Now, the widgets and the sidebars are on the right side and less distracting. Also, if you were listening to my podcast this week, you may have heard that I am going to change up a bit with regards to my Memes that I host - Monday Mommy Tips Meme and Friday Faves Meme. Although I love hosting these 2 memes I must admit that I have gotten “bored” with them (for lack of a better word). So, I have decided to dump those 2 Meme’s … “bye-bye” and welcome a new weekly Meme called … drumroll please …. “Tuesday Toot”!

Obviously it will be every Tuesday and the idea behind it would be that you get to “Toot Your Own Horn”. What does that mean? Well, it means every Tuesday, you get to post an accomplishment that you have done. I realize as moms sometimes, we are quick in praising our kids and others about their accomplishments but we are “shy” when it comes to our achievements so … here is your chance. Got no accomplishments … no worries, tell us about somebody else’s accomplishment. It’s time for us to CELEBRATE our achievements - what better way then by “Tooting out Own Horn”. Let us let the whole world know - that we are proud of our accomplishments! It will kickoff tomorrow - Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008. I’ll have a graphic handy if you want to play along. I look forward to reading your “toots” tomorrow.

Hey, before you go … do me a favor - leave me your thoughts about our “New Look” - any suggestions you may have - I would greatly appreciate it.

This week, I interview Kelly McCausey of WAHMTalkRadio.com about the Importance of FOCUS in Business. She talks about “Entrepreneural ADD” and “Shiny Object Syndrome”. This was an interview that was done a year ago for Celebrating Women’s Day 2007. I know what your thinking … “if this interview is a year old, is it any good?” Well OF COURSE it is! The ideas Kelly shared are very thought provoking - this is a topic that does not get old because every once so often we need to take a step back and look at our business from a different angle. In this interview we talk about things like …

  • What does FOCUSing mean?
  • Why is Focusing important?
  • How do you figure out what you should focus on?
  • How not to succumb to distractions while trying to FOCUS
  • I guarantee that this audio will make you review your current FOCUS. I encourage you to share this resource with others.
