The word “organized” is synonymous to the words methodical, ordered, efficient, neat, tidy and systematic. As I look at these words, I question myself … am I any of these words? My first thought is – “Yes, I would like to think so!” But, as I think deeper … I realize that perhaps organized is what I want to be … I am not exactly there yet. Sometimes, when I clean my desk, I end up stuffing things inside the drawers. The top of the desk looks fine – but it’s all just “for show”. I know I still need to work on seriously organizing my workspace so that I can work for efficiently.
I’ve done quite a bit of reading about the best ways to get your desk organized and below are four of the top suggestions on how to keep your desk less cluttered and make it work better for you:
1. If you don’t need it – toss it! This applies to everything from extra pens and pencils to junk mail that is just taking valuable space and collecting dust in your desk.
2. Assign a home in your desk for items you use. If possible, use drawer dividers or trays to keep pens, paper clips, staplers and similar items in place and hanging folders to keep papers under control.
3. Keep constantly used items within your reach so that you are not searching for it when you need it. This includes items like pens, calculator, and sticky notes.
4. Take 10 minutes each week to go through your desk and sort through whatever papers you have. File away what needs to be filed and throw away all the junk. This way, things don’t get piled up in your desk.
My plan is to empty my desk and go through everything that I have in there. I will toss away whatever I no longer need, prioritize the items that I will leave in my desk and assign a place for each item. I will make time each week to go through my desk so I can keep it clean, neat and well organized.

I just organized mine a few weeks ago. I blogged about it here: http://www.thesnyder5.com/2009/12/day-five-of-500-pound-declutter.html

This is an area I have def. been slacking in. My desk has become a catchall-for bills, school work, etc. I just need to buckle down and clear it out…but it’s so scary in the deep depths of my drawers!

@Molly – just finished reading your post … isn’t it interesting what you re-discover when you are trying to get everything organized?
@SavingObsession – Just do it – even if you do it in 15 minute increments. Go through what you can, toss out the junk and organzie what you have left and you will be happy you did.

Thanks again for the organizing tips. I must confess, organization is my weakest area …. so this helps get me on track.
